EARLY CAREER RESEARCHER TRAVEL AWARD

Purpose and Scope

The BFS Early Career Researcher Travel Award (“ECR Travel Award”) is an initiative of the Bachelier Finance Society (BFS) to support promising early career researchers in mathematical finance and closely related areas by facilitating their participation in academic events. The award provides competitive travel support to attend BFS-affiliated events.

It is designed to:

  • facilitate participation of early career researchers in high-quality scientific events;
  • support the dissemination of cutting-edge research; and
  • strengthen the international BFS community.

Eligibility

The ECR Travel Award is open to researchers participating in a BFS affiliated event (e.g., conference, workshop, summer school) and who are

  • PhD students; or
  • researchers within three (3) years of their PhD defence, calculated as of the first day of the event for which funding is requested.

The 3-year period is measured from the official defence date as recorded by the awarding institution.
Further event-specific eligibility requirements (for example, that the applicant must deliver a talk or present a poster) may be added by the organisers, provided these are clearly stated in the call for applications and are consistent with this framework.

BFS-Affiliated Events: Criteria

Any academic event may apply to be recognised as a BFS-affiliated event for the purposes of the ECR Travel Award, provided that all of the following conditions are met:

  1. BFS membership among organisers
    • At least one of the main organisers is a BFS member for the whole of the relevant period: from applying for the affiliation to the disbursement of funds to the successful applicants after the event.
  2. Scientific committee
    • The event has an identifiable scientific committee responsible for the academic content.
  3. Transparent scientific process
    • The organisers clearly specify how the scientific committee evaluates submissions, selects contributed talks and posters, and determines the scientific programme and related matters, as described in the application for BFS affiliation (see Section 4).
  4. Open submissions
    • Submissions to the event are open to all interested researchers in the field; the event is not closed or purely by invitation, even though some invited speakers may be included.

BFS affiliation for the purposes of the ECR Travel Award is granted on a per-edition basis (i.e., it applies to a specific year/edition of the event).

Details of how to apply can be found here.
