PhD Student in Climate Change, Finance, and Sustainability
Reykjavik University – Full time
Deadline: October 1, 2024

The Department of Engineering at Reykjavik University is recruiting a full-time, on-site PhD candidate for the project “Climate Change, Finance, and Sustainability.”

The Research and Responsibilities
This project aims to use counting processes to model the arrival times and magnitude of severe weather events and forecast their frequency and extent. The applicant will investigate the utilization of point processes with atmospheric drivers, and self-exciting processes in particular, to model severe weather events. The results will be employed in the field of financial weather markets to evaluate the prices of financial products that are derived from weather and climate. In this setting, point processes will be employed as the “jump component” in jump-diffusion models. Questions from mathematical finance, such as how to price derivatives using the proposed models, will be addressed analytically or numerically. Cross-excitation or contagion effects between different components, such as the occurrence of severe weather events in different geographical locations will moreover be considered and analysed in a financial engineering setting. A special emphasis will be placed on exploring applications and mitigating actions which further the UN Sustainable Development Goals 11 – 13 and 17.

Qualifications
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated student with good communication skills.

  • A Master’s degree (or comparable) in Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, Quantitative Finance or Financial Engineering is compulsory.
  • A strong foundation in mathematical finance is essential.
  • Experience in working with and analyzing data is essential.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the capability of working independently in disparate fields is desired.
  • English fluency is required.

Applications Process
Applications should be submitted through the university’s online applications website and should include the following:

  • A detailed CV with information about your education.
  • Attested copies of education certificates, including grade reports.
  • A cover letter, where you briefly describe your research interests and why you are interested in joining this project.
