Applications are invited for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Mathematics Department at Florida State University, beginning August, 2019. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related area, and have postdoctoral experience. They should do research in the field of Data Science, broadly defined, with a significant mathematical component, and be interested in supervising doctoral students and developing courses in Data Science. The Mathematics Department offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in several broad areas of mathematics, including applied and computational mathematics, biomathematics, and financial mathematics. The department and university encourage and support interdisciplinary research, and there are opportunities for collaboration within the department, where research employing geometrical and topological data analysis, as well as machine learning with financial and biomedical imaging data, is currently being performed. There are also ample opportunities for collaboration with investigators in other departments, including topics such as neuroscience, biophysics, and genomics.

Florida State University is one of two flagship research universities in the State University System of Florida, with over 40,000 students in the main campus of Tallahassee. Tallahassee is located in north Florida and has a population of roughly 190,000. It is adjacent to the Apalachicola National Forest and about twenty-five miles from the Gulf of Mexico, with easy access to pristine beaches and other natural habitats. Tallahassee has a warm climate, with an annual average high temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit and an annual average low temperature of 56 degrees Fahrenheit.
