The Department of Mathematics at the University of Padua (Italy) invites applications for a tenured faculty position at the Associate Professor level. Appointment at a higher rank (Full Professor) may be considered for an applicant with exceptional qualifications. The tentative starting date is 1 October 2020. The Department of Mathematics intends to fill this position through direct appointment (Italian “chiamata diretta”). To be eligible, candidates must have been holding a position equivalent to that of Italian Associate Professor at a foreign University or Research Institute for at least three years. To receive full consideration, applications should arrive by 10 November 2019. Applications received after this date may be considered in a future selection in 2020.

The present call is open to scientists working in:
Probability Theory, Stochastic Processes, Statistical Mechanics, or Mathematical Finance (Italian SSD MAT/06).

The successful applicant will have an outstanding research track record, demonstrated through publications in top-ranked Mathematics journals, presentations at major conferences, prizes and awards. Evidence of high achievement and excellent potential in teaching is also expected.

The position entails developing and maintaining an innovative research program in an area of interest to current faculty, teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and PhD levels, supervising graduate and PhD students and supporting the Department’s academic mission through service. The salary for a full-time Associate Professor position starts at about fifty thousand euros per year before taxes, according to national regulations (currently, presidential decree no. 232, 15 December 2011). According to current legislation, foreign residents can benefit from significant fiscal incentives for a period of at least six years (DL 34/2019, art. 5).

The Department of Mathematics provides any new faculty member with a starting research grant for the first year. Every year, based on a competitive selection process, the Department allocates to its faculty members research funds of about one hundred eighty thousand euros as well as support for up to five one-year postdoc positions. Additional funding is available through competitive research grants at the University level.

The Department of Mathematics hosts two bachelor’s degree courses (in Mathematics and in Computer Science), three master’s degree courses (in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Data Science), and a PhD program in Mathematics with an average of six three-year
scholarships awarded per year. The Department of Mathematics fosters interdisciplinary research and encourages collaborations with research units and departments across the University.
