Louis Bachelier
Louis Bachelier (1870-1946) was a French mathematician. He is considered to be the founder of modern mathematical finance as he was the first in history to apply stochastic processes to evaluate stock options. His PhD thesis The Theory of Speculation covered the study of finance with the use of Brownian motion. (cf. Wikipedia)
